RIM's BlackBerry Agenda: SharePoint and Deeper Business Integration

In an enterprise-oriented road map for its BlackBerry smartphone platform, RIM (Research in Motion) is planning a BlackBerry client for Microsoft's SharePoint collaboration platform as well as middleware capabilities for enterprise application integration and cloud-based mobile device management.

The road map supports RIM's hope that businesses in general, and CIOs in particular, will get past their experimentation with iPhone and other mobile devices and turn back to the security and compliance approaches of the past that favor the BlackBerry platform. "We believe issues of complance and security will again be their focus," said Alec Taylor, vice president of product marketing at RIM. He suggested that only the BlackBerry platform can support such a focus, saying that mobile management tools for competing platforms aren't capable enough.

SharePoint client for BlackBerry

Due early this year, the BlackBerry SharePoint client for Microsoft manages documents and shares SharePoint calendar events, according to RIM. The client provides document-centric collaboration and integrates with BlackBerry applications like email, calendar, and browser.

"[The client] allows you access to SharePoint from your BlackBerry," enabling users to get work documents and collaborate with colleagues while out of the office or away from their PC, Taylor said. The SharePoint client would function with the BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server).

Forrester Research analyst Jeffrey Hammond lauded RIM's SharePoint move. "I think it makes a lot of sense because we've seen almost viral deployment of SharePoint," and customers want mobile support for it, Hammond said. He added getting SharePoint on the rival iOS or Android platforms would be a difficult proposition. (There are third-party SharePoint clients for iOS, however.) RIM needs to make a move like this to keep BlackBerry popular within IT organizations, Hammond said.

Enterprise application integration

The company's BEAM (BlackBerry Enterprise Application Middleware), also due in 2011, is intended to help BlackBerrys better accommodate applications initially written for PCs. "BEAM is a set of libraries and APIs that help to mobilize line-of-business applications" for delivery to a BlackBerry, Taylor said. RIM is working with partners like Oracle and SAP to tune applications for BEAM.

Also working with BES, BEAM would feature alerts to client-side applications and make device-side information available to server-side applications. RIM also said that BEAM will automatically rework the data transmitted from such applications to be more efficient, so as to reduce the load on cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

BEAM also met with analyst Hammond's approval: "Employees are spending more and more time out of their offices and away from their desktops and laptops, but they still want these capabilities."

BES comes to the cloud

RIM's cloud plans involve cloud enablement of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. "Right now, BES is an on-premise solution. As we see more organizations migrating to the cloud, we're thinking about a strategy with respect to what that means for BES," Taylor said. "BES in the cloud is on the road map."

The planned cloud BES service will provide a Web-based console for managing BlackBerrys and is designed for small organizations using an Internet service provider or hosted email, RIM said.

Also on RIM's road map is an enterprise server architecture for BES that is designed for the cloud. That architecture would accommodate cloud computing through multitenancy and "significant" scalability improvements, according to RIM.

BES 5.0.3 and PlayBook tablet due soon; BlackBerry OS 6 timeline unclear

RIM also plans to ship by April BES 5.0.3, which it announced in July. The update will support BlackBerry OS 6's ability to selectively wipe corporate information while leaving personal information and apps in place. So far, the only BlackBerry OS 6 device available is the BlackBerry Torch, which was released last summer, and RIM executives could not comment on when additional BlackBerry OS 6 devices would be available or if any existing BlackBerry models would be upgradable to the new OS.

RIM also previewed its PlayBook tablet, which it said would ship by April. The tablet features a seven-inch screen and runs its own operating system, the BlackBerry Tablet OS based on the QNX OS RIM acquired a year ago. Pricing will be competitive to other tablets, which typically sell for $600 to $900, RIM senior product manager Ryan Bidan said.

When tethered to a BlackBerry via Bluetooth, the PlayBook can access BES-enabled services, such as email and corporate apps. When not tethered, the PlayBook can access the Internet via Wi-Fi and run locally installed apps, but it cannot access BES-enabled services or be directly managed via BES, according to RIM. RIM had no details on ways to manage a PlayBook outside of a BES environment, such as for employees who are issued a tablet but not a smartphone or whose smartphone is not a BlackBerry.

Okta's Service Offers Single Sign-on for All Cloud Apps

While using cloud-based applications solves some problems for IT administrators, it also creates new ones, including how to handle user identity management.

Startup Okta, led by the former head of Salesforce.com's engineering group, says it has the solution. For six months it has been quietly offering a hosted identity management service for companies to manage their cloud services, and it is now formally launching the company.

Two early customers include Pandora and Enterasys. Pandora runs almost 30 cloud applications, and users were continually forgetting passwords or URLs and turning to IT for support, said Todd McKinnon, CEO of Okta.

Enterasys has more than 1,000 employees using around 20 software-as-a-service apps. Before Salesforce.com referred it to Okta, Enterasys did some internal custom development to try to connect the hosted services to Windows Active Directory as a way to make it easier for users to access the services.

"It was maybe a bit unstable at times," admitted Ben Doyle, director of IT applications for Enterasys.

Plus, the system needed frequent maintenance to keep up with updates from the hosted services, McKinnon said.

Okta is now serving both Pandora and Enterasys as well as others with its hosted offering that integrates all the SaaS services a company uses with Active Directory. Employees visit a home page that looks like an internally branded site and sign in using their existing Windows password. From there, they can access any of the hosted services.

The service offers IT administrators user management tools as well as information about use of the services. From the administrator console, an IT manager can give individual employees rights to access hosted services. Currently, administrators can choose from around 200 SaaS applications that are integrated into Okta. McKinnon said Okta plans to constantly add new applications.

Enterasys has asked Okta to add support for applications and Okta has been able to turn around and provide it quickly, Doyle said. Usually Okta has had the integration available for testing within a couple of days with full production availability in a week or two, he said.

IT managers can also use Okta to easily delete user permissions when employees leave the company or change jobs. That capability was of major interest to Doyle. While his IT department manages most of the cloud services employees use, a couple are administered by different departments. While IT had a process for deleting accounts for employees who left the company, sometimes the administrators in other departments wouldn't do the same. That meant someone who had left the company could have potentially accessed sensitive data, depending on the applications the employee was using.

"That was the real security hole I wanted to plug," Doyle said.

In addition, Okta shows IT administrators if employees are actually using individual services. That can help IT departments keep costs down by eliminating subscriptions for people who aren't using services.

It's a feature Doyle really appreciates. "For me, one of the most important things is managing adoption early in the process," he said. "If you have good visibility into who's logging in and when, it's good data to have but it also gives you the opportunity to reach out to people. If you see a new user log in who hasn't before, you can send an e-mail or pick up the phone and say, 'did it go OK.'"

While some of the hosted applications Enterasys uses offer that kind of user data, some don't. Plus, Okta offers it all from a centralized location. The Okta service also warns IT administrators about potential security issues, such as when someone tries to log in but fails a certain number of times.

Okta is initially focusing on companies with up to around 1,000 employees but expects to grow to accommodate large enterprises, McKinnon said. The service costs US$12 per user per month.

For Doyle, because Okta uses Active Directory, it serves as an important tool to unite cloud-based and on-premise apps. "It makes all of our cloud apps behave the same way as our on-premise apps behave," he said. "We want to get to the point where our users can't tell if they're logging into a cloud app or an on-premise app."

Motorola Mobility Posts Strong Q4 but Warns About Q1

In its first earnings report since becoming a standalone company, Motorola Mobility said it was profitable in the fourth quarter of 2010 and shipped more than twice as many smartphones during the quarter as it did in all of 2009.

However, the company said it expects a net loss of US$26 million to $62 million for the current quarter, indicating that competition in the smartphone market continues to be heated. Executives plan to speak to industry analysts on Wednesday afternoon and may offer more details of the expectations then.

For the fourth quarter, net income was $80 million, or $0.27 per share, compared with a loss of $204 million, or $0.69 per share, a year earlier. Net revenue was $3.4 billion, up 21 percent compared with the same quarter in the previous year.

Motorola Mobility, which separated from its parent company in early January, has two groups: Mobile Devices, which makes phones, and Home, which makes set-top boxes and other IPTV equipment.

Mobile devices generated net revenue of $2.4 billion, up 33 percent year over year. Operating earnings were $72 million.

Net revenue from the Home segment was $1.0 billion, up 1 percent from a year earlier, with operating earnings of $54 million.

Motorola said it shipped 4.9 million smartphones in the quarter, more than double the 2.0 million shipped for the full year of 2009. The company now exclusively uses Android to power its smartphones, a shift from its previous strategy of making devices that ran a variety of operating systems. Still, sales of phones in 2009 were particularly low because it was a transition period for the company, which struggled to come up with a new hot phone after years of relying on its Razr line.

Motorola's Droid handsets and other Android phones have been popular. The company launched seven new smartphones in the fourth quarter. It also recently announced products in new categories, including the Xoom, a tablet that will be one of the first to run Android 3.0, known as Honeycomb. Motorola also announced the Atrix, a phone that pairs with a docking station that has a monitor and keyboard but is portable like a laptop.

'Cinderella' Tax Break May Boost IT Buying This Year

WASHINGTON -- A so-called 100% bonus depreciation tax benefit approved by Congress last month may give IT managers an incentive to upgrade equipment before this benefit expires at year-end.

The tax benefit, part of Congress' tax bill, was made retroactive to Sept. 8, the day President Barack Obama pitched the idea as an immediate economic stimulus .

Greg Rosica, a tax partner at Ernst & Young LLP, said the benefits from depreciation on new equipment, such as servers, can take as long as five years for companies. But the 100% bonus depreciation allows a company to take the entire benefit in the first year.

The amount of benefit is a function of the type of business and the tax rate paid, said Rosica. A business, for instance, that is paying the top corporate tax rate of 35% and spends $100,000 on equipment will be able to take a $35,000 reduction on their tax bill in the current year.

There is no limit on the amount of equipment that can be depreciated, but it must be new.

Rosica said the benefit "can significantly reduce your cost" in the short term -- a company will still get that same tax bonus over a five-year period, but the bonus is allowing them to accelerate it and get it all upfront.

The tax benefit will be of help to those companies that don't normally keep some eligible IT equipment in use for five years, Rosica added.

Frank Scavo, president of research firm Computer Economics, said the tax change will impact the timing of new purchases. "Buyers who are looking out 18 months now may move acquisitions into 2011 to take advantage of the accelerated depreciation," he said.

The tax benefit's relatively short window "could create a mini-boom in new equipment purchases , perhaps even [leading to] some shortages of key components," said Scavo.

The flip side of this benefit may be a fall-off in new purchases in 2012, said Scavo. "This is the problem with trying to fine-tune tax treatment; there are almost always unintended consequences," he said.

Howard Hammer, a principal at accounting firm Fiske & Company in Plantation Fla., believes the tax benefit is "going to have a tremendous effect" on buying. "Medium and large corporations have been stockpiling cash for quite a while and I think now they are going to jump on it," he said.
