Google Revamps Map Interface

Google has added new tools to its maps interface that make it easier to move between views in the program. Now you can hop from a satellite view to a map view to an earth view with the click of a thumbnail. What's more, you can impose on a view various "layers" -- traffic patterns, geotagged photos and videos, webcam locations and such -- with the same simplicity.

When you hover over the thumbnail of a view in the widget, a second thumbnail of another view will appear. For example, if the map view is displayed on your screen, hovering over the widget will display thumbnails for the satellite and earth views.

Clicking the satellite thumbnail, displays a satellite view of your map.

Clicking the earth thumbnail, displays a view from Google's earth app.

Below the thumbnails, there's a button labeled traffic. Clicking that button displays a menu of the various layers that can be imposed on the view.

For example, clicking on the traffic choice will show you the current traffic patterns in your map area, allowing you to avoid congested throughways.

You can also use the menu to see photos and videos that have been tagged to locations on the view, as well as bicycling routes, location-linked Wikipedia entries, real estate for sale and a number of other layers.

The new navigation widget is a welcome improvement to Google Maps. It groups together the many features of the application in a way that's easy to find and friendly to use. Better yet, it makes a great app even greater.

Apple Maintains Its Sanctimonious Streak by Denying Playboy

iPad-wielding prudes, take heart: Apple is holding tight to its "no nudes is good nudes" policy and has no intention of letting girly-magazine purveyor Hugh Hefner soil the pristine Apple App Store with a filthy native app for viewing uncensored past and present issues of Playboy.

That news might come as a disappointment, though, for on-the-go oglers who were titillated by reports of an iPlayboy app on the way. That news was spawned by none other than Hef himself via Twitter: "Big news! Playboy -- both old & new -- will be available on iPad beginning in March." A follow-up tweet asserted the issues would be uncensored.

It ain't quite so; it turns out Playboy is going to roll out a service through which users can access the Playboy archives via the Internet -- a move that falls under the category of too little, too late for a publishing company whose value has dwindled from $1 billion in 1999 to around $210 million today. Per Playboy, "The service will be iPad compatible and will utilize iPad functions." The functions aren't clear. Touch, perhaps?

Additionally, Playboy plans to create a native app for the Apple App Store through which users can access censored versions of Playboy. Reportedly, the magazine contains articles, along with risqué jokes that presumably are acceptable, in Apple's view, for its customers to consume.

This comedy of errors marks the latest chapter in Apple's vain and self-defeating effort at playing protector of the masses. The company has two choices: It can accept the fact that some of its customers do, in fact, want to view exposed body parts on their devices, whether it's full-frontal nudity or a pixelated naughty bit in a graphic novel version of classic literature. Whatever the case, Apple can help meet the demand by letting providers create native apps to give users a smooth, nonbuggy, and possibly more secure viewing experience. That, after all, is the point of offering native apps rather than delivering everything through browsers.

The other option -- and it looks like Apple is sticking to this road -- is to continue blithely disregarding customer demands in an ongoing display of misdirected sanctimony. Apple is telling customers, "You might want a certain type of perfectly legal content on a device you bought from us, and there might be companies that are willing to present you with that content in a format that is optimized for that device. Sure, you can still view it on the device via our Safari Web browser, which does support the Web version of the content. It just won't look as good. So there."

Nokia's Profit Drops, Faces Need to Change Faster

Nokia reported an increase in sales for the fourth quarter, but profit declined as the company continues to struggle in the high-end smartphone segment.

Sales for the quarter totalled €12.7 billion (US$17.4 billion as of Dec. 31, the last day of the period reported), up 6 percent compared to a year earlier, helped by favorable exchange rates. However, year-on-year, net profit dropped from €948 million to €745 million.

The company sold 123.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010, down 3 percent year-on-year. Nokia was affected by the intensely competitive mobile phone environment as well as certain component shortages, which it also said negatively affected sales in the third quarter. That resulted in Nokia's market share falling to 31 percent, compared to 35 percent a year ago, according to Nokia's estimates.

In addition, the average sale price for its smartphones declined.

The volume of smartphone shipments increased 36 percent to 28.3 million units during the last three months of last year. Nokia sold 5 million units of its Symbian 3-based N8, C7 and C6-01 smartphones, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said during a conference call. But the overall market is growing faster. Nokia said its smartphone market share, year-on-year, dropped from 40 percent to 31 percent.

The average sale price of Nokia phones was €69, which is €5 more that what buyers paid a year earlier, Nokia said. That's not the whole story, however. The average sale price for smartphones dropped by 17 percent, Nokia said. The decline was mainly caused by general price erosion in the segment, and an increase in the proportion of lower-priced smartphones, the company said.

What Nokia is doing now is trading price for volume, according to Nick Jones, vice president at Gartner. Investors want action, and a new strategy has to include how Nokia is going to compete with Apple and the Android camp in the high end, Jones said.

"Is Nokia able to produce a MeeGo device that can genuinely compete with Apple, or do they need a completely new strategy, abandon MeeGo, and join up with Microsoft on Windows Phone 7," Jones said.

Nokia also needs a tablet strategy, even though it is a difficult market to jump into because it is moving fast, according to Jones. It also needs to make the Symbian user experience better, and since Nokia has taken over development of the operating system it has the mechanism to do that, he said.

"When all is said and done, Nokia is still the world's largest [mobile phone] manufacturer, and they are generating a lot of cash. They have the resources to change, and what we need now is some indication of a credible plan for change," Jones said.

Pressure is now mounting on Elop to announce a strategy that answers some big questions, Jones said.

"Nokia faces some significant challenges in our competitiveness and our execution," Elop acknowledged in a statement. "In short, the industry changed, and now it's time for Nokia to change faster."

Nokia is planning to announce a new strategy on Feb. 11.
